How to Remove your Invisalign Aligner

Invisalign aligners are loved by patients for the remarkable versatility they offer. Unlike traditional wire braces, Invisalign aligners can be removed, meaning that they lack the dietary restrictions that often accompany other orthodontic treatments.

However, at first, taking your Invisalign off can be easier said than done. If you’re getting aligners soon or you have them now, it’s perfectly normal to have a little bit of trouble taking them off at first. If you want to know how to remove your trays more easily, here are a few things you can try.

Warm your Mouth

Cold water or air can potentially cause the plastic on your aligners to contract, making them very difficult to take off. If you’ve been drinking something cold, you might want to try opening your mouth to let your trays warm up. On the other hand, if cold air is the problem, try closing your mouth for a moment before removing your trays.

Move in From the Molars

Instinctually, you may think that it makes the most sense to start removing your trays from the incisors, i.e. the front teeth that you can reach most easily. However, most people find that it’s more effective to start from the back of the mouth and move forward. You might also want to try working from one side of the mouth to the other. Feel free to experiment a little until you find the starting place that works for you.

Get Hooked

If you find yourself struggling to remove your aligners, you may also want to consider purchasing an aligner hook. This is a small plastic crook designed to grab onto the extra material on your aligner and pull it off of your teeth. It’s compact enough to carry with you on the go, meaning that you can take your aligner off easily, anywhere.

Use a Paper Towel

One of the things that makes an Invisalign aligner hard to remove is how slick it can be. A paper towel can absorb some moisture, giving you a better grip on your tray that makes it easier to remove.

Ultimately, the most important factor is practice. You’re going to have your Invisalign tray for around 12 months, so by the end of it you can expect to be a pro at removing them.
