When the clock strikes midnight, a fresh start begins! With this in mind, people across the U.S. use the last couple of weeks of December to write down the goals they want to tackle with a clean slate. And although eating healthier and being more active typically makes everyone’s list, why not add some smile-friendly New Year’s resolutions to yours? Here are a few to get you started from a dentist in Big Pine Key!

#1. Cut Back on Sugar

Did you know that the average American consumes just over 126 grams of sugar daily? To give you some perspective, that is over 10x the amount of the lowest recommendation! Continuing down this road not only can have disastrous consequences on your overall health, but it can also lead to tooth decay, cavities, and gum disease. So, cut back on your sugar intake this year, and, when you do indulge, opt for mouth-healthy options, like raisins and fresh fruit.

#2. Commit to Flossing Daily

All too often, patients view flossing as an optional component of their oral hygiene regimen. In reality, it is equally as important as brushing! After all, your floss pick or water flosser is able to effectively clean along your gum line and between your teeth, resulting in healthy gums and improved oral health. If your flossing tools are collecting dust, then commit to using them daily in the new year.

#3. Schedule Your Dental Checkup and Cleaning

Another crucial factor in your dental care routine is visiting your dentist twice a year for a dental checkup and teeth cleaning. If you missed one (or both) of yours last year due to the unforeseen events of 2020, then it is especially important that you attend both of your appointments this year. That way, your dentist can ensure your oral health is in good condition, administer treatment if it isn’t, and clean every nook and cranny of your mouth.

#4. Leave Poor Dental Habits Behind

Do you find yourself biting your nails when you are bored or stressed? Do you have a habit of using your teeth as tools to open things? Do you smoke? If you partake in any of these poor dental behaviors, then there is no time like the present to turn over a new leaf. When you feel tempted, just remember the thousands of dollars you are saving on restorative and cosmetic dentistry to fix the consequences of these bad habits.

Improving your oral health with the above resolutions will not only lead to a healthy smile, but it will also benefit your general wellbeing. So, what have you got to lose? Use the above ideas to shape your smile-friendly goals!
